BONE BROTH SMOOTHIE

I spent this weekend celebrating the love of two of my favorite people in the world, high in the Colorado mountains, surrounded by many interesting , well-traveled people. It was the tale of one couple’s trip to Australia and the amazingly healthy cuisine they enjoyed, that inspired me to combine some of the most nutritious foods out there to create a Bone Broth Smoothie.  Sound weird? It is…but in a really good way.

Bone broth is often called "liquid gold" due to its many benefits to the body.  It is rich in collagen, gelatin, glucosamine and chondroitin which are amazing for joint and gut health and strengthening the body’s connective tissue, bones, skin, nails and hair.  I noticed that my skin glowed after a few weeks of adding bone broth to my diet.

Homemade bone broth is thick and gelatinous which makes it perfect for making smoothies.  Add in some dark leafy greens for dietary fiber, folic acid, potassium and magnesium, vitamin C, plus a  bunch of phytochemicals, like  lutein and beta-carotene; blueberries which are full of the antioxidant  proanthocyanidin which has been  proven to fight cancer, help with weight loss and make your skin glow; banana for dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals;  turmeric which has natural anti-inflammatory properties; and avocado which is packed full of healthy fats that will keep you feeling satisfied and energized for hours.

The flavor is savory with a slight sweetness from the fruit. To lessen the sugar use a green apple or green tipped banana.  If desired, you can give it a sweeter flavor by adding a touch of honey, maple syrup or stevia.  I prefer to leave out the sweetness, especially when having this for breakfast, to keep blood sugar levels regulated.

Note: It is best to use homemade bone broth. The store bought brands will not have the gelatin which gives the smoothie its thickness.
